What causes acne - do we really know?

You may be suprised to learn that nobody knows the exact cause of acne! Of course there is speculation and very good hypothesis as to why you suffer from spots and pimples. Yet to date there is no clinically proven evidence highlighting one particular cause.
With the number of acne treatments on the market this may seem unusual, well not really as it is suspected that acne is caused by a disorder of the normal functionality of the glands that lubricate the skin (sebaceous glands). These glands are located just below the skin and often seen as a pore. They are responsible for producing oil that lubricates the skin, keeping it smooth.
The problem often starts when the glands start to overproduce oil making the skin very oily and shinny. So what causes this overproduction? Most often this is linked to hormonal changes and why you often see teenagers with spots and pimples. This is also why at other stages of your life you can suffer from acne, such as during pregnancy and menopause. You can also suffer from acne when triggered by other factors, such as stress, as this is affected by hormonal changes.
The good news is that acne related to puberty, pregnancy or menopause often clears up on its own. Some of us may not be so lucky and continue to suffer from acne for longer!
Hormonal induced acne makes sense as a theory but not everyone suffers from acne and not everyone who does suffers from the same symptoms. There is certainly other factors at play here, most likely due to genetic make-up and/or variations in skin type. These factors have yet to be quantified by the scientific community as there are so many variables. Indeed there will certainly be external factors too, such as environmental pollution and possibly diet.
That said, despite the different causes of acne there are treatments that can combat the spots and pimples so you can avoid embarrassment and get on with your life. Many of the popular acne treatments are available over the counter and tackle the problem using natural ingredients that do not cause irritation. If you are unsure which product to use then take a look at the many reviews available, just be sure to consult a doctor if you are every unsure what product is right for you.
